When getting comfortable with witchcraft or any spiritual path, have a clear idea of what you want personally from it and what your community contribution should be. For me, I label these distinctions as Black Magick for my personal journey and White Magick as my social contribution. These are two distinct paths for me, so I follow two systems of magick.
My Black Magick path is rooted in left-hand witchcraft these include philosophies from Satanism, Witchcraft, Vampirism, and other mythologies and paths that celebrate the individual as a spiritual source. The need for self-realization and fulfillment is needed for any kind of achievement, especially in the occult. To release yourself completely can also be dangerous in a spiritual path as you can fall victim to many self-proclaimed Gurus, evangelist, and other predators who target those who are lost. By following the Black Magick path to clarify personal goals, needs, and wants, it helps my inner journey and sets healthy boundaries when approaching the community with a spiritual intention. To put it bluntly, if you go out into the world with no idea of your needs and personal fulfillment, you run the risk of becoming a blank slate and following anything or anybody who presents a promise or a future of spiritual enlightenment. The need for black magick is crucial when clarifying what it is you want and what you need to gain the courage to go after it.
As opposed to Black Magick, White Magick has the goal of serving society and working towards the greater good for all mankind. For most, this involves merging with the universe, god, or nature by letting go of the ego. For my White Magick path, the Rosicrucian traditional fulfills my need to contribute to society. This traditional follows the path of ancient philosophy and the alchemical approach introduced in the late nineteenth century. This pulls me out of the emotional mindset of witchcraft and approaches the craft from a logical point of view. I use this method when dealing with what I call the outer witchcraft. My outer path deals with finding the science, psychology, and other ways to describe the experience of the occult to engage with the world without becoming the gentle soul who will fall for anything. Most Rosicrucians would turn in their grave at the thought of me mixing Black Magick with such a noble society, but when it comes to science and the politics of the occult within the community, the Rosicrucians know how to navigate this aspect of my craft. When I need to present the lessons learned from the occult to society, at times I prefer using psychology and/or science to explain it to people outside of my culture. By using this method of White Magick, I can still serve the greater good of humanity without losing my ego and merging with the cosmic and/or nature. This is a great way for all of us who follow the Left-Hand Path, but still need to contribute to society without revealing our personal experiences if we are not comfortable sharing it with present company.
My question is: how do you navigate your Inner and Outer Witchcraft? What paths work the best for you?
